Background of the Study
Youth participation in community development is essential for fostering sustainable progress and social cohesion. In Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State, adult education has emerged as a key mechanism for empowering young people to actively engage in developmental activities. Adult education programs targeting youth focus on civic engagement, leadership development, and practical skills necessary for community organizing. These programs not only impart essential knowledge but also encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative action among the youth (Usman, 2023). Through workshops, seminars, and participatory learning sessions, young individuals gain exposure to contemporary development theories and practices that inspire proactive community involvement (Abdullahi, 2024).
In a region marked by socio-economic challenges and a history of underrepresentation, adult education serves as a catalyst for change by equipping youth with the tools to influence local governance and drive community-led initiatives. The educational interventions provided in Damboa are tailored to address the unique challenges faced by the youth, including limited access to formal education, unemployment, and social marginalization. By focusing on skill development and leadership training, these programs aim to bridge the gap between youth potential and actual community engagement. Furthermore, the integration of traditional knowledge with modern development practices creates a holistic approach that respects local cultures while promoting innovative solutions (Usman, 2023).
Adult education also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among young people, motivating them to contribute to the planning and execution of community projects. The collaborative nature of these educational initiatives encourages networking, mentorship, and the sharing of best practices, which are critical for sustaining long-term community development. The resulting empowerment is reflected in increased youth participation in local decision-making processes and enhanced community resilience. As such, adult education not only transforms individual lives but also strengthens the social fabric of Damboa by mobilizing the energy and creativity of its youth (Abdullahi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
In Damboa Local Government Area, youth participation in community development remains limited despite the presence of adult education initiatives. Many young people are either unaware of or unable to fully benefit from existing programs due to various challenges such as inadequate resources, limited access, and socio-cultural barriers (Usman, 2023). These constraints result in a significant underrepresentation of youth in community planning and development activities. Furthermore, the adult education programs available often lack the necessary focus on practical, community-based skills, leaving many participants ill-prepared to engage in local development projects (Abdullahi, 2024).
The disconnect between the intended outcomes of adult education initiatives and the actual level of youth engagement presents a critical challenge for community development in Damboa. Factors such as financial constraints, transportation difficulties, and competing responsibilities further restrict the participation of young people in educational programs. Additionally, the content and delivery methods of current programs may not be sufficiently tailored to the interests and needs of the youth, leading to low enrollment and high dropout rates. This gap between program design and participant needs not only undermines the potential impact of adult education but also perpetuates the cycle of youth disengagement and marginalization. The study seeks to explore the effectiveness of adult education in enhancing youth participation in community development and to identify the specific obstacles that limit its success. By addressing these issues, the research aims to offer practical recommendations for designing more responsive and impactful educational programs that truly empower youth to take active roles in shaping their communities (Usman, 2023; Abdullahi, 2024).
